Montenegro accuses PS of “giving a hand to Chega” and Ventura’s party of being “that’s enough” for the socialists

Luís Montenegro added that “the PS cannot be laughing”, saying that he had been “for years showing fear of Chega”.

This Monday, the Prime Minister accused the PS of “giving a hand” to Chega and André Ventura’s party of being the “come to me” of the socialists, stating that he will not be intimidated “by hasty assessments and behind-the-scenes moves “.

At the dinner that marks the start of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the PSD, in Lisbon, Luís Montenegro stated that the “political environment is strange” and hopes that the opposition parties “which unfold in interviews” can explain “one of the biggest unknowns that must plague the thinking of the Portuguese”.

“How come a party like Chega spent an entire electoral campaign saying that it was absolutely necessary to run with the government’s socialists, and now after the elections they are a kind of ‘I’m sorry’ from the PS?”, he asked, in a an allusion to votes on initiatives made possible with the votes of both parties in parliament in recent weeks, against the wishes of the PSD.

Luís Montenegro added that “the PS cannot be laughing”, saying that he had been “for years showing fear of Chega”.

“In such a way that I didn’t have a second of rest, it was Chega here and Chega going there. But after all, the PS doesn’t mind giving a hand, giving a hug to Chega and nothing happens. Chega is the ‘ This is enough for me’ from the PS, the PS gives Chega a lap and nothing happens, that’s right…”, he joked.

Montenegro sought to counter that the Government will continue “with exclusive dedication” to the problems of the Portuguese and left a special word on the negotiation processes already initiated with the security forces, court officials, teachers and health professionals.

“You can say that the start of negotiations did not please all professionals, but it is worth remembering two things: firstly, if the issues were resolved, it would not be important to have negotiations”, he said, highlighting that the Government has been in office for 30 days and the PS had 3,050 days.

On the other hand, he assured that this Government — “nor would anyone else have the courage to do so” — does not want to worsen the situation of any professional group.

“It’s not worth pulling the wool over anyone’s eyes, we will always be balanced, fair and loyal and negotiate with everyone, but we want the same spirit of loyalty on the other side of the table. Whoever is there, and if there are interlocutors with special responsibility, we will have to ask them for special responsibility”, he warned.
