Climate activists block entrance to Banco de Portugal

-

A group of activists is blocking the entrance to the Bank of Portugal, in Lisbon, in a protest to denounce the Government’s investment in the fossil industry and the lack of investment in the “fair energy transition”. The Fim ao Fóssil collective says that “two students were detained” and that the police “refused to explain why”.

In a statement, the group reports that several students blocked the entrance to the building, even sticking to the doors. Two of the collective’s members blocked themselves inside the revolving doors.

This movement demands “the end of the use of fossil fuels by 2030, and that we stop using fossil gas to produce electricity by next year, instead using 100% renewable and free electricity”.

According to the students, this was the first action in a wave of protests called “Student Spring to End the Fossil”. During this period, the group guarantees that it will continue to interrupt the normal functioning of several institutions, until they commit to ensuring the end of Fóssil by 2030.

“On June 8th, we will march against the institutions that are failing us. We call on the whole of society to join us. Stopping the biggest crisis humanity has ever faced depends on everyone’s action”, says Catarina Bio, student and spokesperson for the action.

Group guarantees to occupy faculties

The collective also informs that on Tuesday it will join the wave of protests carried out by students, who have occupied colleges in several countries, especially the USA.

They guarantee that they will do so to demand “an end to massacres in the name of profit: an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Palestine and an end to fossil fuels by 2030 in Portugal”.

“We are going to occupy against a system that is comfortable with letting millions of people die in Palestine and due to the climate crisis. We cannot give peace to the institutions that are failing us”, says Teresa Núncio, also spokesperson for the action.
