The Government, according to a joint order from the Minister of Internal Administration and the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, extended the deadline for cleaning forests and land until May 31st.
The rainfall recorded in recent months and the high water content in the soil contributed to the extension of the deadline, which, according to information provided by the municipality of Amarante, conditioned fuel management operations and encouraged the rapid growth of vegetation in areas already intervened. .
In the municipality, and to date, 55 hectares of strips have been built with the collaboration of forestry teams registered with the municipality. A goal established by the Municipal Council of Amarante, within the scope of the Municipal Forest Defense Plan against Fires, for the year 2024.
The interventions in question were carried out in the Union of Parishes of Aboadela, Sanche and Várzea, Union of Parishes of Olo and Canadelo, Parish of Rebordelo, Parish of Fridão, Union of Parishes of Figueiró (Santiago and Santa Cristina), Parish of Mancelos, Parish of Gondar and Union of Parishes of Freixo de Cima and de Baixo.
The main objectives of cleaning are: reducing the surface covered by large fires, allowing and facilitating direct fire-fighting intervention; reduce the effects of fire passage, protecting communication routes and infrastructures and isolating potential fire ignition points.
