The Town Halls of Tavira and Faro are two of the 30 Portuguese buildings that will light up, this Wednesday and Thursday, to mark Europe Day and call for people to vote in the European elections, taking place between June 6th and 9th.

In Portugal, the Belém Tower, the São Bento Palace – Assembly of the Republic, the Lisbon City Council, and Cristo Rei, in Almada, will also be lit up in blue. From North to South, among many others, the Bragança Castle, the Guimarães City Hall, the Matosinhos Municipal Theater and the “Anémona” sculpture will light up, the buildings of the Town Hall of Coimbra and Tomar, the Caldas da Rainha Congress Center, the Portalegre City Council building, the City Gates of Ponta Delgada (Azores) and Angra do Heroísmo (Azores).

In addition to national monuments, more than 60 cities in the European Union will illuminate their monuments, such as the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, the Colosseum in Rome and the Grand Place in Brussels. During these two days, the monuments will display the election campaign slogan “Use your vote. Or others will decide for you” or raise the European flag.

With these illuminations in cities across Europe, the European Parliament and national and local authorities are sending a message of unity to 440 million European citizens about the importance that the European elections will have for everyone’s future.

Europe Day is celebrated annually on May 9th, to celebrate the peace and unity of the European continent. The date marks the anniversary of the historic “Schuman Declaration”, which set out Robert Schuman’s vision of a new form of political cooperation in Europe, which would make war between European countries unthinkable. The current European Union is considered to have begun with Robert Schuman’s proposal.
