The Regional Center of the Portuguese League Against Cancer Center (NRC.LPCC) opened the deadline for applications for Oncology Research Grants yesterday. In the symbolic session – which took place at the Institution’s headquarters, in Coimbra – a new feature was highlighted: to the six awarded in the last edition, there was added, for the first time, a Research Grant aimed at Research in the area of gynecological cancer, the Professor Carlos Grant de Oliveira.

Four NRC-LPCC/CIMAGO Oncology Research Grants, a Dr. Rocha Alves Fellowship, a Dr. Dário Cruz Fellowship and, for the first time, a Professor Carlos de Oliveira Fellowship. There are seven Oncology Research Grants announced this Monday by NRC.LPCC, with applications open until June 30, 2024.

The NRC.LPCC thus has 70 thousand euros to encourage innovative research projects on cancer, distributing this amount equally among the seven scholarships in the 2024/2025 edition.

This year, the big news is the creation of the Professor Carlos de Oliveira Scholarship, in honor of the gynecologist, professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra, former president of the Portuguese League Against Cancer and the Regional Center of the Center, for his indelible academic career in the area of gynecological cancer.

Present at the ceremony, the honoree did not hide his pride and “honor” of seeing his name attributed to a Research Grant, remembering the years in which he was linked to the Institution and reinforcing the desire to see this Fellowship last over time, with results rewarding. “I hope to be able to see one day later a fellow from this Research Grant who has contributed to the survival or cure of a cancer patient”, he concludes.

Vítor Rodrigues, president of NRC.LPCC, gave a brief overview of the Scholarships awarded in recent years, highlighting the launch of a seventh in this edition, and stressing that “this is only possible thanks to the support of the community, it is up to us to know how to manage in the best way”, adding, also, that, if the IRS Consignment increases to 1% “we may increase the number of Scholarships”.

Isabel Carreira, the Coordinator of the Center for Research in Environment, Genetics and Oncobiology (CIMAGO) and José Manuel Casanova, President of ACIMAGO (Association supporting CIMAGO), also present at the session, highlighted the leading role of the former president of the NRC .LPCC, Carlos de Oliveira, who started this partnership with NRC.LPCC, congratulating himself on the “continuous growth” he has experienced over the years.
