Spain’s desire to have access to Água de Alqueva is once again on the agenda. The topic is no longer new and Spain is insisting again. According to information provided by Notícias to Minuto, Spain sent a letter to Portugal regarding this matter.

The Deputy of the Government of Spain, in statements to the Spanish press, at the end of April said that “there seem to be conditions” to negotiate access for Huelva Farmers to the water of the largest artificial lake in Europe.

Despite the Spanish news, the Minister of Environment and Energy, Maria da Graça Carvalho assured NM that “no point regarding the supply of water to the neighboring country is on the table”. The Governor denied receipt of any letter from Spain on this matter.

The Ministry of Environment and Energy only confirmed that a meeting will be held between the ministers and secretaries of State counterparts from Spain, to discuss energy and environment issues”, having nothing to do with the issue of water from the Alqueva Dam and a possible use by Spain.
