The Polytechnic of Viana do Castelo won third place in the National Robotics Festival, in what was its first participation in the event and which mobilized students from the Degree courses in Computer Engineering in Mechatronic Engineering, from the Escola Superior de Tecnologia e Gestão (ESTG- IPVC).

With the aim of promoting and stimulating teaching, scientific research, technological development and different applications in the area of robotics, the Polytechnic of Viana do Castelo competed with the team from the Robotics Center of the Escola Superior de Tecnologia e Management (ESTG-IPVC), created together with the ADiT-Lab Research Unit.

The ESTG-IPVC | ADiT-Lab participated in the Robot@Factory Lite test. It was “a competition that aimed to simulate an autonomous robot, capable of transporting various containers between warehouses and processing machines, as quickly as possible and with the least number of errors”, explained Pedro Miguel Moreira, professor of the Degree courses in Computer Engineering and Computer Graphics and Multimedia Engineering.

With third place achieved, Pedro Miguel Moreira takes stock “extremely positive”. But it wasn’t just the result that was highlighted. The professor at the Polytechnic of Viana do Castelo also highlights the entire preparatory process, including the construction and programming of the robot, which led to a positive sharing of knowledge and experiences among the entire team. “The competition was very competitive and allowed us to learn about different approaches, implement improvements and strengthen performance for each contest.”, he added.

The Viana do Castelo Polytechnic team is made up of students João Martinho Ramos, Gonçalo Caselhas and Filipe Ferreira (from the Degree in Computer Engineering course) and Napame Sá de Pina (from the Degree in Mechatronics Engineering), coordinated by teachers Pedro Castro and Pedro Miguel Moreira.

The National Robotics Festival took place at the beginning of this month, in Paredes de Coura, and was promoted by EPRAMI and the Portuguese Robotics Society, with the support of the National Agency for Scientific and Technological Culture – Ciência Viva and the Municipal Council of Paredes de Coura.
