This Tuesday, the GNR accused a 58-year-old man in Monção for scamming elderly people in that and several municipalities in the district of Viana do Castelo and in Galicia, Spain, the police force reported.

In a statement, the Territorial Command of the GNR of Viana do Castelo explained that the suspect was identified and located following an investigation into two crimes involving fraud against the elderly.

During the police action, “it was also possible to determine that the man is suspected of committing this type of crime, in several municipalities in the district of Viana do Castelo and in locations close to the border, in the territory of the Kingdom of Spain”.

According to the GNR, “the suspect’s modus operandi” consisted of approaching victims in their homes, usually elderly and alone, with the aim of demanding payment for car parts supposedly ordered by family members, claiming that they had been family members to send him to the place to deliver the item and receive the respective value, thus carrying out the fraud”.

The facts were communicated to the Monção Judicial Court.
