The municipality of Gouveia, which is part of the demarcated region of Dão, will host the fourth Cities of Wine Competition from this Thursday (9 May). Around 30 experts will evaluate wines from across the country over four days in a tasting that, last year, took place in São João da Pesqueira.

José Arruda, general secretary of the Association of Portuguese Wine Municipalities, highlights that this competition “is unique in the world for uniting municipalities and producers, that is, for simultaneously promoting wines and territories, and that its success only has was possible due to this joint involvement of municipalities and producers”.

In the competition, which ends on Sunday (12th), wines from all wine regions of mainland Portugal and islands compete.

José Arruda adds that the main objective of the competition “is to show that the excellence, diversity and uniqueness of our wines are a reality and that they are a mirror of our territory, which is also so diverse and has such a differentiating wine tourism offer”.

“This is what this national competition aims to value: the excellent quality of Portuguese wines combined with a territory full of life, culture, traditions and experiences to offer”, says the organizer.

Luís Tadeu, president of the Chamber of Gouveia, says that the event is “a unique and special competition in Portugal, especially for the way it seeks to promote national wines and their producers, associating them with their respective municipalities and making them, also them, strong and permanent agents of promotion and dissemination of the territory”.

Luís Tadeu also adds that “holding the 4th National Enological Competition in Gouveia will allow us to consolidate the investment that the municipality has made in the wine and vineyard sector and, inevitably, project and give visibility to the territory, valuing it and increasing the his offering and visitation.”

The Cities of Wine Competition has the high sponsorship of the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, and the institutional support of the Ministry of Agriculture. Vasco d’Avillez presides over the Honor Committee, António Ventura is president of the Jury and António Curvelo Garcia presides over the Scientific Technical Committee.

Last year, the event distinguished more than 150 wines, of which 43 wines from Douro and three from Dão.

The Cities of Wine Competition is considered the only national wine competition that combines the promotion of wine with the appreciation of the respective territories.
