Tomorrow we celebrate Espiga Day, a Portuguese celebration that takes place on Ascension Thursday.

It is believed that this day was born from a Christian ritual or ancient traditions from the age of the Gods, associated with the festivals of the goddess Flora. But Espiga Day or Ascension Thursday is also a religious festival, marked 40 days after Easter and which celebrates Jesus’ ascension to Heaven, after being crucified and resurrected.

With or without religious beliefs, the day is celebrated as a Municipal Holiday in Beja and music, culture and sport are part of the program of activities that the city hosts on the 8th and 9th of May.

The stage is already set up in Parque da Cidade José Manuel Carreira Marques. Tonight, Khiaro’s show is scheduled for 9:30 pm, followed by the concert by Xutos & Pontapés singer Tim, at 11:30 pm. The night ends with a DJ at 00:30.

On the holiday itself, the morning begins at 9:30 am with the Inauguration of the Monument to the Combatant, in Praça do Ultramar. At 10:00 am, Sports leads the activities in a “Sports Morning” and, an hour later, at Pax-Júlia, a Solemn Session for the Presentation of Municipal Medals will take place.

From 4pm to 7pm tomorrow, Beja hosts a “Family Afternoon” with Musical Entertainment and the holiday ends with a performance by Choir Groups. Throughout the day, for the youngest, several inflatables will be on view.
