The number of establishments, non-financial companies, increased by 7.2%, to 34,035, an increase of 2,291, in 2022, compared to the previous year, and personnel employed increased by 8.1% to 95,616 people.

The turnover generated by non-financial companies in Madeira increased by 33.4%, in 2022, to 9.5 billion euros, compared to the same period last year, according to data from the Regional Statistics Directorate (DREM). This accounting includes establishments located in the Region, which belong to companies with headquarters outside the region and companies in the region with establishments on the Mainland and/or in the Autonomous Region of the Azores.

The number of establishments, of non-financial companies, rose 7.2%, to 34,035, an increase of 2,291 establishments, in 2022, compared to the previous year. Personnel employed in non-financial companies grew 8.1% to 95,616 people in 2022, compared to the previous year.

Regarding the increase in the number of establishments, this increase is influenced by “information and communication activities” (+18.4%), “artistic, spectacle, sporting and recreational activities” (+16.0%), “real estate activities” (+15.2%) and “accommodation, restaurants and similar activities” (+11.8%)”, according to DREM data.

Calheta (+10.9%) and Santa Cruz (+10.7%) were the municipalities with the highest relative growth in number of establishments compared to 2021, followed by Funchal (+7.6%), Ponta do Sol ( +6.5%) and Ribeira Brava (+6.4%). In terms of geographic distribution, the location of establishments coincides with the location of companies: highlighting the municipalities of Funchal (50.1%), Santa Cruz (13.6%) and Câmara de Lobos (9.3%), hierarchy also verified at the level of personnel employed, with those municipalities, in the same order, concentrating 60.1%, 11.5% and 7.0% of total employment”, adds the regional statistics department.

The increase in employed people is contributed by the “municipalities of Calheta (+9.9%), Funchal (+8.8%), Porto Santo (+7.9%), Câmara de Lobos, Ponta do Sol and Porto Moniz (ex-aqueo with +7.8%)”, while by activity sectors the highlights are ““Information and communication activities” (+14.8%), “Accommodation, restaurants and similar” (+ 14.5%), “Administrative activities and support services” (+14.0%) and “Artistic, entertainment, sporting and recreational activities” (+12.6%)”.

With regard to the increase in business volume, this was influenced by the sectors of ““Accommodation, restaurants and similar” (+70.6%), “Consultant, scientific, technical and similar activities” (+48.1 %), “Administrative activities and support services” (+47.0%), “Electricity, gas, steam, hot and cold water and cold air” (+42.0%) and “Information and of communication””, and by the municipalities of “Porto Moniz (+189.2%), Calheta (+45.2%), Porto Santo (+39.5%), Ponta do Sol (+35.7%) and Funchal (+35.0%)”.

DREM also states that establishments engaged in “wholesale and retail trade” activities; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles” (43.9%), Accommodation, catering and similar” (10.2%), “Construction” (9.1%), “Transport and storage” (6.5%) and “ Manufacturing industries” (4.8%) are those with the greatest preponderance in total business volume”.
