Around 1300 extras, from almost all institutions and associations in the municipality of Machico, will participate in the Quinhentista Market, which will take place on the 7th, 8th and 9th of June.

The entertainment will be constant, with the presence of 50 groups, mobilizing six hundred artists. Six professional music and theater groups and one from Italy will come from outside Madeira.

Opening on all three days at 4pm, the market is marked by highlights, including, on the first day, the pyrotechnic show ‘Fogo da Purificação’, part of the Atlantic Festival.

The always awaited ‘Disembarkation and Fire Procession’ takes place on the 8th, at 4:30 pm. On this day, the highlight is also the pyrotechnic show of trapped fire, at 11:30 pm. On the 9th, Sunday, the day before the Portugal Day holiday, the show ‘Fachos à borda mar’ will take place at 10pm.

‘Machiquo, floor of fire’ is the general theme of Mercado Quinhentista, an event, organized by Escola Básica e Secundária de Machico, which is in its 17th edition. Fire, as a prominent element, justified the presentation at Pico do Facho, where, in the past, large bonfires were built as a warning for the approach of enemy ships.

Due to the number of participants and the program outlined, it is expected that there will be another strong attraction of visitors, locals and tourists, to the city of Machico over the aforementioned three days.

The event has the support of the City Council and the Regional Government, through the regional departments of Education and Tourism and Culture, among other support from private entities that are associated with the project.
