The PTP candidacy was in Ribeira dos Socorris this afternoon to denounce what it considers to be “one of the biggest environmental crimes in Madeira committed by the PSD government”

Raquel Coelho gave the example of what is happening in Ribeira dos Socorris, which was the target of the installation of quarries and landfills. For the PTP, “there are practically no natural and untouched rivers left in Madeira, because they were all destroyed by the extraction of aggregates”.

Furthermore, stated the candidate, “the rivers were disturbed in an irresponsible, greedy and incompetent way, so that businessmen could make a fortune from inert resources”.

Raquel Coelho argued “that they are killing the ecosystems of the rivers and putting the safety of the population at risk and not a single euro pays for the extraction of aggregates”.

“The children of tomorrow will no longer know what a river is”, lamented Raquel Coelho, noting that, in addition to the Socorris, this “environmental crime is repeated in almost all the rivers in the municipality of Funchal (Ribeira de João Gomes, Ribeira de Santa Luzia, Ribeira de Santo António) and in other municipalities in the Region, such as Ribeira Brava, Ribeira da Tabua, Ribeira da Ponta do Sol, Ribeira da Madalena do Mar, and also to the north, in Ribeira da Metade and Ribeira Seca, in Faial, and in Ribeira de São Vicente.

According to the PTP, it is necessary to regulate the extraction of aggregates from rivers and this will be one of the main measures that will be taken to the Regional Parliament.
