The Moimenta City Council, through the Civil Protection Service, installed more than 110 traps in strategic locations throughout the municipality that allow the capture of the velutina wasp, commonly known as the Asian wasp.

The trap installation plan is coordinated with the beginning of the activity of this non-indigenous species, which is invasive and predators of bees and other pollinating insects. The objective of this action is to capture the queen wasps, which are the founders of new colonies, thus preventing reproduction and the exponential increase in the number of adult Asian wasps in the local ecosystem.

The duly identified traps were acquired under the project “GESVESPA DOURO: Integrated management of the Vespa Velutina in the Douro”, promoted by the Douro Intermunicipal Community (CIMDOURO), co-financed by PO SEUR.

It is important to ensure that Asian wasp capture objects are not disturbed, destroyed, removed or moved from a perspective of effective combat, with benefits for all populations. In case of nest sightings, citizens should contact the Moimenta da Beira City Council, or report it via the STOPVespa online platform.
