The promoters of Magellan 500, the so-called Santarém airport, will be received at a hearing, tomorrow, May 9th, at 2 pm, by the Economy, Public Works and Housing Commission to present their proposal to build an airport from scratch, located north of Santarém.

The Magellan 500 project, developed by private developers, was designed with the collaboration of leading national and international partners, over three years and, according to the promoters, “is based on a concept of environmental sustainability and flexibility at the top of its priorities”.

Magellan 500 envisages the construction of an airport from scratch, north of Santarém, financed exclusively by private capital, designed in phases and scalable, taking advantage of existing road and rail access (A1 and Linha do Norte), just 30 minutes from the capital. This project “promotes territorial cohesion, serving a population of six million inhabitants”.

The promoters inform, in a statement, that “as it is designed in phases, the airport can begin operating with a first runway within five and a half years, handling 10 million passengers per year. The expansion potential foresees an operation of up to a maximum of three runways and more than 100 million passengers per year and a large cargo logistics terminal”.
