70 thousand drivers, 12 million passengers, 150 nationalities and 200 million trips in 195 Portuguese cities. This is the summary of a decade of Uber in Portugal, which kicked off the celebrations with the launch of a new, more accessible and sustainable travel option, UberX Share.

“It is with great pride to celebrate Uber’s 10 years in Portugal, with the launch of yet another solution that reinforces our commitment to sustainability, efficiency and innovation: UberX Share. Uber has revolutionized mobility, offering users a more convenient and optimized service, which complements the public transport offering, in order to allow more and more people to no longer need to have their own vehicle. Throughout this decade, TVDE generated more jobs, more companies, more revenue and more tax revenue. With accumulated experience in more than 70 countries over 15 years, we have developed several products and solutions to increasingly become a reliable, safe and trustworthy platform that takes users anywhere and delivers anything”, comments Francisco Vilaça, General Manager at Uber Portugal.

Impact of TVDE

According to data from the National Statistics Institute (INE) from December 2023 referring to the end of 2022, the TVDE passenger transport service had a significant economic impact on urban mobility in the country. Since 2013, the evolution of the sector has been remarkable, with an 85% growth in employment in the occasional passenger transport sector in light vehicles. This growth resulted in the net creation of around 13 thousand jobs, currently totaling more than 28 thousand jobs. Furthermore, the number of companies in the sector doubled, reaching 21.7 thousand, and the turnover tripled, growing from 480 million euros to 711 million euros, and an increase in tax revenue by 248%.

UberX Share

The mobility platform entered the Portuguese market in July 2014 with the Uber Black option. In December of the same year, it introduced the most economical option, Uber X, and, over the following 10 years, it presented more options to its users, such as Uber Green, UberComfort, Uber from now on, UberX Share in Greater Porto, Lisbon and Margem Sul.

UberX Share provides a greener way to get from A to B, transporting more people in fewer cars. Sharing trips will help reduce emissions and congestion in cities.

As the most economical option on the platform, users can receive a discount of up to 30% if they choose UberX Share. The full discount will only be applied if there is a successful match with another user.

For drivers, UberX Share means increasing the target audience for their transport services and having an option in which trips become longer, as they are linked together by several users, and in which they receive at least the same as on an equivalent UberX trip. On average, UberX Share adds just a few extra minutes to your trip when combined with other passengers.

UberX Share arrives on the market to strengthen Uber’s contribution to replacing private cars with a range of shared multimodal mobility options, in addition to public transport, and increasingly electric.
