A 75-year-old man from the state of Missouri, in the United States of America (USA), strangled his sick wife to death in a hospital bed, claiming that he could no longer pay for the ongoing kidney dialysis treatment.
According to The GuardianRonnie Wiggs was arrested on charges of second-degree murder in connection with a femicide (gender-based hate crime).
According to a statement that prosecutors published Saturday and cited by the newspaper, Wiggs accompanied the woman to a hospital in Independence, Missouri, so that she could receive a new medical device that would allow her to continue undergoing kidney dialysis.
Wiggs fatally strangled her, covering her nose and mouth to prevent her from screaming, while she was in bed.
Prosecutors allege that Wiggs left the hospital after the murder but returned when staff found his wife lifeless. Within earshot of at least one hospital employee, Wiggs admitted: “It was me. I killed her. I suffocated her,” television station KCTV reported.
It was at that moment that he confessed that he could no longer take care of his partner, nor pay the medical expenses. He also acknowledged having tried to kill his wife twice.
