The PSD and Chega failed this Wednesday in Parliament a vote to welcome the Left Bloc to the European Parliament’s decision to recommend that the right to abortion be included in the European charter of fundamental rights. The remaining parties voted in favor.

The Prime Minister had already shown himself against this European Parliament resolution in the preparatory debate of the European Council, on April 12th. In a response to the PAN deputy, in the Assembly of the Republic, Luís Montenegro argued that there would be an “imbalance in the legal system” if the right to abortion were included in the charter of fundamental rights of the European Union (EU) as he considers that the right to self-determination of the woman and the right to protect life “conflict”.

In BE’s greeting vote, which was voted on in the Committee on Constitutional Affairs, Rights, Freedoms and Guarantees, the party argued that the “The European Parliament’s decision is a fundamental step towards defending freedom, equality, justice and sexual and reproductive health across the European Union.”

And he considered that, in Portugal, “the consecration of legal abortion to the voluntary termination of pregnancy at the woman’s request” is “today seen as a milestone in the country’s progress”, after having taken “several decades and two referenda to be achieved”.

Deputy Joana Mortágua, from BE, has already come https://twitter.com/JoanaMortagua/status/1788205550641037319 to the lead of the proposal on X (formerly Twitter), accusing the PSD and Chega of uniting “against the consecration of women’s rights”. And he asked: “What will the Prime Minister defend at the European Council when the time comes to speak?”

On April 11, the European Parliament adopted a resolution calling on the European Council to initiate a convention to revise treaties to include sexual and reproductive health care and the right to safe and legal abortion in the charter of rights. fundamental elements of the EU.

The idea is that the document will stipulate that “all people have the right to autonomy over their body, to free, informed, full and universal access to sexual and reproductive health and rights, and to all related health services, without discrimination, including access to safe and legal abortion.”

The proposal passed with 336 votes in favor, 163 against and 39 abstentions and will now have to be unanimously approved by the European Council.
