The EB 2,3 School in Aver-o-Mar now has a Snoezelen Room. The space, called “Sensory Sea”, opened this week, fulfilling an old dream. It is a multisensory room that aims to stimulate the six senses of the human being and reduce levels of anxiety and tension, being a place that provides comfort and offers a large amount of stimuli, which can be used in a individual or combined effects of music, notes, sounds, light, tactile stimulation and aromas.
This therapeutic method was already a reality for some of the students on the autism spectrum in the Group, however, it can be visited by everyone, being highly beneficial for users, regardless of the condition. By providing a safe environment, the Snoezelen Room promotes self-control, autonomy, discovery and exploration, as well as positive therapeutic and pedagogical effects. LED light projectors, lava lamps and educational games are some of the instruments that can be found in this investment that cost around 10 thousand euros.
The Director of the Group, Carlos Gomes de Sá, proudly announced the project that was finally completed thanks to various collaborations, including the companies Quantal and CCR. In addition to students, teachers and staff, the teacher wants to open the space to the community, particularly the elderly, leaving him with the challenge of seeing it replicated. At this time, there are already Snoezelen Rooms at Escola Cego do Maio and Mapadi and, in the future, the municipality will create another one in the future Centro Ocupacional da Estela. The Vice-President of the Chamber of Póvoa de Varzim, Luís Diamantino, was at the inauguration and recognized that the Municipality could not remain indifferent to this project, having contributed to the financing of the room’s floor.
This was yet another initiative that reinforces the dynamism of a “school without borders, which has students from 24 countries” and which is involved in several important projects.
