It is a new increase and shows that the remote work regime, which entered the lives of professionals with the pandemic, is here to stay. In the first quarter of this year, 1,030.5 thousand professionals (20.5% of the employed population) worked from home and, of these, 988.1 thousand (19.7%) did so using information technologies, thus configuring the concept of teleworking.

The number appears on the module ad hoc which follows quarterly data from the Employment Survey, released this Wednesday by the National Statistics Institute (INE), and translates into an increase of 1.9 percentage points (pp) compared to the last quarter of last year and 1.8 pp in compared to the same period in 2023.

According to INE, and considering the total number of workers who worked from home in the first quarter of the year (1,030.5 thousand), 23.3% (239.8 thousand) always did so and 35.3% (364, 0 thousand) did so regularly through a system that combines in-person and home work.

In turn, 13.2% (136.2 thousand) worked from home only occasionally and 28.2% (290.5 thousand) did so outside working hours. Numbers that, when compared to the previous quarter, reflect an increase of 3.8 pp in the number of professionals whose work at home was carried out outside working hours.

Mixed regime is the most adopted by companies

According to data known today, among those who in the first quarter of the year reported working regularly from home, 73.2% (266.6 thousand) reported practicing a model that combines work in person and at home, combining every week, a few days a week at home.

This was also the regime that recorded the biggest year-on-year change, with an increase of 6.3 pp which translates, in absolute terms, into 69.2 thousand more professionals.

Those who worked under a hybrid regime in the first three months of this year spent, on average, three days a week working from home, according to INE.
