On the occasion of Uber’s 10th anniversary in Portugal, the company announces a new type of travel for all its customers. Now, it is possible to share trips with other unknown passengers.

The aim is to reduce travel costs and the number of cars on the road with a clear environmental benefit. This new service is called UberX Share and will place up to three passengers in a car at the same time.

“Today we want to announce big news, which is the launch of UberX Share, a ride sharing solution between passengers, which allows more people to be in the same car.” Said Francisco Vilaça, general director of Uber for Portugal.

UberX Share application will automatically pair users

Car sharing will be done automatically through the UberX Share application. This pairing will take place between passengers with compatible routes, allowing them to be served by the same driver.

When you enter your location and destination into the application, it will cross-reference this data with other requests made. If you find other trips compatible with that route, more passengers will be added to your car.

Francisco Vilaça states that this method of sharing trips will allow savings of up to 30%. There are also advantages for drivers who will be able to serve up to three customers on a route that “is the equivalent of taking a longer UberX trip”.

It is important to clarify that if one of the passengers leaves before the end of the route, the UberX Share app may add another user to the trip. As mentioned, the limit is three passengers at the same time and not three on each route.

For those who care about environmental issues, this travel sharing is excellent news. In this way, Uber wants to reduce the number of vehicles on the roads, actively contributing to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

Uber has already served more than 12 million passengers in Portugal

Uber Portugal also took advantage of this opportunity to take stock of its operations in the country. Since July 4, 2014, the date it officially entered our country, this platform has served more than 12 million people.

She also notes the most frequent destinations for the Portuguese. According to their data, they mostly use Uber to travel to work, airports, restaurants and bars, shopping centers, tourist attractions, hospitals and clinics.

Uber is also proud to have the largest center of excellence in Europe in Lisbon. This represented an investment of 91 million euros and employs 400 employees.
