Braga City Council announced this Thursday morning that it has already started the process of transferring the Municipal Archive to the new facilities, located in the former Francisco Sanches School, in S. Victor.

The documentation, including the historical archive until now installed in the Paços do Concelhos building, will be subject to anoxia treatment (quarantine) and will be inaccessible for consultation during the treatment and cleaning process. The file will be progressively made available for internal and external consultation, starting in September.

It should be noted that the urban planning file, the last to be transferred, will be inaccessible during the transfer process. From the second half of July, internal and external consultation of this documentation will be carried out in the new facilities of the Municipal Archive.

“This building will house the Municipal Archive, including the historical archive, the collections of the Image Museum, the Casa dos Crivos and other cultural assets of the Municipality. Consultation rooms, a library, a document processing and cleaning area, reading rooms, spaces for exhibitions, among other features, were created, which will make this a reference space not only for the city, but for the entire region”, highlighted Ricardo Rio, president of the Chamber.

For councilor Olga Pereira, who is responsible for the management and conservation of municipal equipment, “conditions were created for the preservation of documents and other supports that allow the interpretation of our history. Historians and other researchers will have a space of excellence here.”

It should be remembered that the project for the former Francisco Sanches School involves the general rehabilitation of the entire building, providing its rooms with the comfort and renovation necessary to accommodate cultural functions. The objective is to maximize the enormous potential of the space and take advantage of its centrality. With an investment of more than 1.7 million euros, the project is aligned with the City’s cultural strategy for 2030.
