The Institution has already begun the celebrations of one hundred years of presence in the archipelago, remembering that they arrived here in 1925.

Under the theme “100 years of Caring”, the celebrations began with a mass presided over by the Bishop of Funchal, D. Nuno Brás. The president of the Legislative Assembly of Madeira, José Manuel Rodrigues, and the resigning president of the Regional Government, Miguel Albuquerque, were present.

In his speech, José Manuel Rodrigues praised the role played in favor of society by the Hospitaller sisters. “A big thank you for what you have done over these 99 years and what you do every day in providing care to our population”.

The Hospitaller sisters have a health unit in the region that provides specialized care in Psychiatry and Mental Health, Intellectual Disability and Psychosocial Rehabilitation, with specialized responses in outpatient, inpatient and rehabilitation.

“Today, May 9th, Casa de Saúde Câmara Pestana begins the opening of the celebrations for the centenary of the arrival of the Sisters Hospitallers to Madeira, whose 100th anniversary will be completed on May 9th, 2025. The Sisters Hospitallers came to Madeira on invitation from the General Council of Funchal, in the person of Dr. Vasco Gonçalves Marques, to take over the management of the then ‘Manicómio Câmara Pestana’, which was in a profound state of degradation, both in relation to the physical structures and with regard to the care for the 31 patients who were hospitalized. 13 years after the handover of the Health House to the Sisters, in 1938, Dr. Vasco Marques visited the Institution and recorded in the Visitors’ Book that he had fulfilled “a duty of humanity to have handed over the Hospitallers’ Hospital to the admirable Sisters Hospitallers…!” , says the institution’s statement.

Final note for the presence of the regional secretaries of Health, Pedro Ramos, and Inclusion and Youth, Ana Sousa.
