It’s best not to talk to him about a project from the 70s.

The notorious 1978 The Star Wars Holiday Special was long considered profane among fans. Footage of the commemorative broadcast was distributed as copies for years. And with access to the internet, many other lovers of the sci-fi franchise watched the bizarre Star Wars special – even though it was never officially released on other media, such as streaming.

And just ask Harrison Ford about the Christmas special to see that, like the audience, the show doesn’t have a special place in his heart. For example, in a legendary 2006 episode of the Late Night Show with Conan O’Brien, Ford was adamant in saying “I would kill myself!” in the event of a new holiday special.

What is the Star Wars Christmas Special?

The 100-minute special aired on CBS in November 1978, before the release of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. The main setting is the family’s treehouse. Chewbacca in Kashyyyk, with his wife Mallayour son Lumpy and your father Itchy.

The sitcom-style comedy with endless Wookie growls – and no translation – is occasionally interrupted by phone calls from Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), TV segments or other videos. The whole thing seems more like a variety show in which, in addition to the typical problems with the Empire, we also find some musical performances.

The special’s grand finale takes place in a parallel dimension where the Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) sings a song in celebration of Life Day and everyone listens with reverence. There is also Ford, who, even back then, showed how little he wanted to be involved in the sentimental nonsense of the science fiction saga.
