“I shouldn’t make any more movies after this”: Hollywood legend talks about one of his biggest flops – Film News

When you’ve made as many films as Robert De Niro, one or two failures can’t be avoided. The Killers of the Flower Moon star was hit particularly hard by the fiasco of his directorial debut.

Even though we have some classics and direct-to-DVD comedies mixed in, especially in the new millennium, the filmography, which dates back to the 1960s, counts the masterpieces, The Godfather 2 and Raging Bull. Oscar-winning actor Robert De Niro is absolutely stunning.

Throughout his incredible career, De Niro has not only been in front of the cameras, but also tried his luck for the first time in 1993 – but with little success, at least from a financial point of view. His directorial debut, Bronx Break, only managed to gross around 17 million dollars, having cost around 21 million, a clear failure for De Niro, who was quite used to success at the time, and whose directing career seemed to be over. before it even really starts.

“I was never asked to do a movie again after that.”, De Niro explained at the recent Tribeca Film Festival, where Bronx Challenge was shown again on the big screen and celebrated its 30th anniversary (via Variety). With this statement, De Niro was clearly not referring to his work as an actor, where he kept himself busy, but rather to his work as a filmmaker. And, in fact, 13 years would pass until De Niro’s second and, to date, last directorial effort, The Good Shepherd, which, said Robert De Niro, was another tough battle.

Still a “great experience”

The poor performance of The Bronx Drift was a huge disappointment for Robert De Niro, given all the work that went into the film, but he was still happy to be able to make exactly the film he intended. And at the end of the day, that’s what matters.

As The Irishman actor also explained at the Tribeca Film Festival, it’s a good confirmation when a film is watched directly by countless people and makes a lot of money, but the work itself and its creation are still the most important thing. Looking back, he also described the Bronx Challenge effort as a “pleasure” and “a great experience.”

And in the end, the once-failed coming-of-age gangster drama also got its deserved recognition: the semi-autobiographical story written by Chazz Palminteri, then De Niro’s co-star, about a boy who is caught between his righteous father (De Niro) and an underworld boss (Palminteri), has become a cult film over the years and is, for many, one of De Niro’s most popular works.
