Sony desperately needs its new superhero movie to be a hit and this move doesn’t invite optimism.

In December, The Lord Of The Rings: The War Of Rohirrim is scheduled to debut, an animated prequel to the famous trilogy directed by Peter Jackson that promises to be a great return to Middle-earth. However, now it has an unexpected rival to take over the box office, as Sony has scheduled the release of a superhero film for the same day that promises to be decisive for the studio.

What is Sony’s latest bet?

The film that will also hit theaters in the United States on December 13th is Kraven – The Hunter, the new installment of Sony’s Marvel superhero universe based around characters from the world of Spider-Man. Taking into account the failures of both Morbius and, above all, Madame Web, the film starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson needs to be a success so that this strange universe can be viable beyond the adventures of Venom played by Tom Hardy.

Against Kraven – The Hunter we also have the fact that this is the fourth time that Sony has delayed its debut, as its release was first announced for January 13, 2023, then was moved to October 6 of last year, later for August and December 30, 2024. Now it looks like we will finally be able to see it on December 13 – in Brazil, probably a day earlier. Of course, this latest move will allow it to be seen on IMAX screens, which will help increase its revenue.

Until then, Sony had planned to release the new Karate Kid movie on December 13th, but it has been pushed back to May 30th, 2024. It’s unclear if this has anything to do with when Netflix will release season 6 and the end of Cobra Kai in its catalog or if the film that will unite Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan has suffered some type of setback.

At least there are some points for Marvel fans to have more hope in Kraven – The Hunter after the failures of Morbius or Madame Teia. Firstly, Sony allowed the film to receive an R rating, and also due to the fact that behind the cameras is JC Chandor, responsible for estimable titles such as Until the End and The Most Violent Year. The problem is that Kraven’s really powerful story is in his confrontation with Spider-Man, and we already know there won’t be any of that here.
