Available since April 27th in the Netflix catalogue, Four Days With Her is a 2020 film that has attracted audiences with its drama-filled story. In it we follow the story of Molly (Milla Kunis), a woman trying to get rid of a drug addiction and who can only count on the help of her mother (Glenn Close).

Despite the blood ties that unite the characters, we soon discover that their coexistence is not peaceful thanks to a series of traumatic episodes. During the film’s 1h40 duration, we see how they try to repair bridges that have been burned and the importance of having support when we need a new chance in life.

Four Days with Her is based on a true story

As the feature film’s credits reveal, it is inspired by the true story of Amanda Wendler (Molly) and Libby Alexander (Deb). The script was inspired by a Washington Post article published in 2016 under the name “How is Amanda? A Story of Truth, Lies, and American Addiction”, in a free translation.

The text earned journalist Eli Saslow a Pulitzer Prize, for dealing with topics considered sensitive, such as the opioid addiction that has destroyed the United States. He reveals that, just like in the film, Amanda enlisted the help of her mother to get a week sober while preparing to enter rehab.

The article reveals that the young woman developed her addiction when, as a child, she ended up suffering an injury. The recommended treatment was a dose of 120 Vicodin tablets, a pain medication known for its high efficiency, but also for being extremely addictive — something that the House series portrayed very well with its protagonist.

Story had a happy ending

To feed her addiction, Amanda ended up looking for other drugs that had the same effect, getting to the point of losing all his teeth after living in conditions without any personal hygiene. Like this In Four Days With Herthe young woman’s story was marked by several failed rehabilitation attempts and abusive relationships with drug traffickers.

The Washington Post article ends inconclusively, showing mother and daughter on another emergency room visit. The most recent update on the case came in 2021, when Amanda Weller gave an interview to Fox News showing that she had recovered.

The story serves as both a warning about the risks that drug addiction can bring and proof that there is a way to recover from it. The intention was to erase some of the stigma about users, showing that most of them just need help to recover.
