“Challengers” with Zendaya is now the most watched film in Portugal, surpassing the intense “Civil War”.
Now is the time to look at the weekly rankings available on the official website of the Instituto do Cinema e do Audiovisual (ICA) to understand which films most pleased the Portuguese public between the 4th and 10th of April and how this changed the Top of the most viewed.
This week, five premieres gained direct entry into this disputed Top 10, leaving behind the films: Dune – Dune: Part Two (11th), by Denis Villeneuve; A Singular Life (13th), by James Hawes; Inmaculada (14th), by Michael Mohan; The Three Musketeers: Milady (19th), by Martin Bourboulon and Cabrini, by Alejandro Gómez Monteverde.
With the May 1st holiday on Wednesday, the new highlights arrived early and the biggest news of the week, “Profession: Danger” showed its full potential by getting a place on this list after just one day of showing.
Still, the lead now belongs to “Challengers” with Zendaya occupying the podium that previously belonged to “Civil War”, the controversial film starring Kirsten Dunst. It will be interesting to see in the following weeks whether Zendaya and her boys will be able to stand up to Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt at their best.
With changes in position and a new leader, these were the most watched films in Portugal this week:
10. REVOLUTION (WITHOUT) BLOOD, BY RUI PEDRO SOUSA
Synopsis: Based on real events, “Revolucion (Without) Blood” follows the lives, dreams and concerns of four young people in the last days of the dictatorial regime. A military coup d’état overthrew the Government and the population was advised to stay at home. However, the desire for freedom led them, along with the crowd, to the streets. With different origins and motivations, April 25, 1974 brought them a common destiny. The day that changed the course of the country also dictated the early end of their lives. This is the story of their lives, a story where we can all revisit each other’s memories a little and confirm that there is a common root in the different generations.

9. PROFESSION: DANGER, BY DAVID LEITCH
Synopsis: Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt star in this explosive comedy that is an adaptation of the series of the same name “The Fall Guy” (1981-86) starring Lee Majors. He is a double and, like all doubles, he is blown up, shot, involved in accidents, thrown through windows and thrown from great heights, all for our amusement. And now, fresh from an accident that nearly ended his career, this working-class hero must find a missing movie star, uncover a conspiracy, and try to win back the love of his life, all while still doing his job. What can go right?

8. SPY X FAMILY CODE: WHITE, DE TAKASHI KATAGIRI
Synopsis: After receiving a replacement order in Operation Strix, Loid decides to help Anya win a cooking contest at Eden Academy, preparing the director’s favorite meal, and thus avoid her transfer. The Forgers decide to travel to the region where the meal originates, but accidentally trigger a sequence of events capable of threatening world peace.

7. GODZILLA X KONG: THE NEW EMPIRE BY ADAM WINGARD
Synopsis: After “Kong: Skull Island” (2017) and “Godzilla vs. Kong” (2021), the powerful Kong and the fearsome Godzilla are placed before a colossal threat. Something hidden in our world that threatens the existence of all species, as well as delving deep into the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond. Going into the heart of the origins of the Hollow Earth, the film also addresses the battle of the Titans that united humanity and monsters forever.

6. LITTLE EVIL LETTERS BY THEA SHARROCK
Synopsis: In the 1920s, an English coastal town witnesses a dark and absurd scandal. Based on a true story, the film follows two neighbors: deeply conservative local Edith Swan and boisterous Irish migrant Rose Gooding. When Edith and the other inhabitants begin receiving vicious letters filled with unintentionally hilarious profanities, the rude Rose is accused of the crime. However, when the town’s women – led by Police Officer Gladys Moss – begin to investigate the crime on their own, they suspect that something is wrong and Rose may not be the culprit after all.

2. PANDA FROM KUNG FU 4, BY MIKE MITCHELL
Synopsis: After three death-defying adventures, defeating world-class villains with his unmatched courage and mad martial arts skills, Po the Dragon Warrior is summoned by fate to… get some rest. More specifically, he is chosen to become the Spiritual Leader of the Valley of Peace. This raises some obvious problems. First, Po knows as much about spiritual leadership as he does about the paleo diet, and second, he needs to quickly find and train a new Dragon Warrior before assuming his new high position. Worse still, there was a recent glimpse of an evil and powerful sorceress, The Chameleon, a small lizard who can shapeshift into any creature, large or small.

CHALLENGERS, BY LUCA GUADAGNINO
Synopsis: After “Dune: Part 2”, Zendaya is back and this time as the protagonist. In the film, the actress plays Tashi Duncan, a former tennis star turned coach who never apologizes for her play on and off the court. She is married to Art and managed to turn him from a mediocre player to a Grand Slam champion. Now that she is facing a losing streak, Tashi convinces him to play in a “Challenger” tournament – the lowest level of the professional circuit – where she will have to face Patrick, a promising talent who is at the end of his career. To make matters worse, Patrick also has the baggage of being Tashi’s ex-boyfriend and Art’s former best friend. As past and present collide and tension increases, Tashi wonders: what is the price to pay for victory?
