Greta Gerwig, the director of “Barbie”, is preparing to embark on a new cinematic adventure with “The Chronicles of Narnia”, in partnership with Netflix.

With the premiere of “Barbie” last summer, Greta Gerwig demonstrated a great creative and versatile mindcapable of producing small-scale works such as “Little Women” and “Lady Bird“, but also modern blockbusters appealing to the general public, such as the aforementioned “Barbie“.

The success achieved by the film starring Margot Robbie (“I, Tonya”) and Ryan Gosling (“Profession: Danger”), which raised 1.4 billion dollars at the global box office, 8 nominations to the Oscars and the acclaim of critics, opened the doors to new opportunities for the director. One such opportunity came in the form of a partnership with Netflixwhich gives him the chance to make a new adaptation of the popular children’s work, “The Chronicles of Narnia”by CS Lewis.

The saga “The Chronicles of Narnia” has 7 books: “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe“, “Prince Caspian“, “The Journey of the Dawn Walker“, “The Silver Throne“, “The Horse and his Boy“, “The Magician’s Nephew“, “The last battle“; published between 1950 and 1959, and follows the journey of a group of children who find a fantasy world hidden in a wardrobe.

The works have been adapted to the screen several times, the most famous being the one produced by Walden Media in partnership with Walt Disney Studios and 20th Century Studios, which hit theaters between 2005 and 2010. The feature films were a moderate success in the box office, falling short of expectations, which led to them not adapting the entire saga. Now, Netflix is ​​preparing to surpass that feat with launch of its own adaptation by Greta Gerwig.

CHRONICLES OF NARNIA ON NETFLIX

Although little information has been released about the project since Netflix acquired the rights to the adaptation in 2018, it is known that Gerwig will be in charge of directing at least 2 of the films in the saga, as well as overseeing the development of their adaptations. According to the international press, the first film will start recording in August 2024, for a period of 7 months.

With such a long recording period, and the need for post-production that allows for the improvement of visual effects, it is expected that the film only hit screens at the end of 2025 or beginning of 2026. So far, the cast of the first film is not yet known, which is expected to be made up of mostly newcomer actors, as the characters are still very young.
