Marvel boss wasn’t sure what the best way to bring Deadpool into the MCU would be

Deadpool & Wolverine has been leaving fans of superhero films excited about the arrival of the Merc with a Mouth in the MCU, as well as the return of Hugh Jackman to the role of Wolverine. But if it depended on the first idea that Deadpool’s interpreter, Ryan Reynoldsoffered the Kevin Feigethe film would not have gotten off the ground.

Reynolds himself told Empire Magazine a little more about the first proposal, which he described as “A Rashomon story about Wolverine and Deadpool and something they were involved in, but told from three completely different perspectives,” said. “It was a way to make a large-scale film in a very small way.”

Rashomon is an expression that comes from Akira Kurosawa’s film, and that has become synonymous with a situation in which it is difficult to know what the truth is about a certain event, as there are conflicting perspectives on what happened.

The film will feature the return of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine and the entry of Deadpool into the MCU.

But Feige balked at the idea, as he didn’t even know how to include Deadpool in the MCU yet:

“The truth is, I didn’t even know how to embody Deadpool yet,” he stated. “I was thinking about how to bring mutants and the X-Men to [o MCU], and I thought it needed to be more than just leaning on our successes. But the truth is, Ryan is an idea machine. So he may have presented this idea, but he also presented 25 others.”

Reynolds added, saying that he went back to working on ideas after the first one was rejected, and wrote “around 18 different plans”which varied greatly in scale and style. “Some were almost Sundance films, with a budget of less than $1 million, kind of using the brand in a way they haven’t yet, and I offered bigger films, but also things in the middle.”

The effort paid off, and finally Deadpool & Wolverine was developed. The film hits theaters in July 26.
