One of the most beloved figures in horror franchises is also the owner of some of the most random roles Hollywood could imagine. Among the 52-year-old star’s crazy feats, the most recent is being the owner of the brand and the look of the clown Bozo. Yes, the iconic character from the 1980s who inspired the feature film ‘Bingo – O Rei das Manhãs’, starring Bahian actor Vladimir Brichta.
Well, let’s get back to the guy we were talking about initially. He comes from a famous clan in the entertainment industry, was married to an actress from ‘Friends’ and was considered a heartthrob in the 1990s, participating in productions such as ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’, ‘Barred at the Ball’, ‘Never Fui Beijada’ and ‘Malditas Aranhas!’, but his career went into decline, he separated from his then wife, invested in a career as a wrestler for World Championship Wrestling (WCW) and now attacks as a clown!
We’re talking about David Arquette, famous for playing the clumsy police officer Dewey Riley in the horror franchise ‘Scream’ – appearing in five of the six films already released. The star now participates in events and fills his social networks with photos of him wearing the famous blue outfit and red hair of the famous clown created in 1946 and who was on Brazilian TV between 1980 and 1991, briefly resurfacing in 2013.
The actor purchased the rights to the character from Larry Harmon Pictures, founded by one of the actors who played the clown and elevated him to the position of pop icon from the 1950s onwards. Today Arquette has the rights not only to the character, but to the entire the universe that surrounds him, licensing jackets, blouses, t-shirts, shirts, sneakers and even coffee powder from Bozo, in addition to arbitrating in the creative decisions of the ‘Bozverso’, such as the creation of the clown ‘Jozo Bozo’, the first woman to join the troupe (at least in the USA, since here in Brazil we had Grandma Mafalda – who, however, did not have the ‘surname’ Bozo). He is the first holder of the rights to the character in 64 years.
