The films of Monkey’s Planet can be divided into three sagas: the original series, the remake and the reboot. Among them, the only film that has no connection with any other is the 2001 remake, directed by Tim Burton. To find out which films you need to watch to keep up with the new wave of productions Monkey’s Planetcheck it out below.

In 2011, a new era of the franchise began Monkey’s Planetwhich ignores the plot of the old films, telling how the apes began to evolve until they became “owners” of the planet.

And, although the films have some homages, especially to the 1968 classic, they can be watched without knowing absolutely anything about the old productions.

Planet of the apes the origin

Directed by Rupert Wyatt (The Rebellion), the film stars James Franco (Spider man) as a human scientist and Andy Serkis (Lord of the Rings), known for his motion capture work, playing Caesar, the future leader of the apes.

Research on simians to find a cure for Alzheimer’s causes a monkey to become extremely intelligent, but become violent when protecting her newborn cub, being slaughtered as soon as she leaves her cage. The scientist helps the baby monkey, naming him Caesar and discovering that he has inherited his mother’s advanced intelligence.

Little by little, the monkey begins to question his origin and his place in the world, at the same time that a new version of the drug used to cure Alzheimer’s suffers a mutation that could be lethal for the human race.

Planet of the Apes: Showdown

Ten years after the events of the first film, Caesar is the leader of a community of monkeys in the middle of the forest, while the world’s population has been drastically reduced by a virus, which at the same time has caused monkeys to evolve quickly and become more intelligent.

This causes a conflict between the surviving humans and the apes, who, led by Caesar, still try to find a way to coexist.

War for the Planet of the Apes

After the events of Planet of the Apes: Showdown, Caesar is forced into deadly conflict against an army of humans. Considered the end of the Caesar trilogy, the film has major consequences for both races and the entire planet.

Planet of the Apes: Showdown It is War for the Planet of the Apes were directed by Matt Reeves, who would later take on the direction of Batmanin which Andy Serkis was cast to play the butler Alfred, continuing the partnership.

Planet of the Apes: Reign

The most recent film in the saga, Planet of the Apes: Reign takes place more than 300 years after the events of the last film, focusing on a new hero called Noa, a chimpanzee who finds himself attacked by a tribe of monkeys who follow, in a distorted way, Caesar’s precepts.

Upon finding a human who can communicate normally, Noa ends up discovering more about the world and about the ancient leader of the monkeys. Although it seems like a new reboot, as it takes place generations after the events of the last film and this allows you to start watching from there, having followed the saga since the 2011 reboot brings more weight to the story.

The Reign features Frey Allen (The Witcher) and is directed by Wes Ball, director of Maze Runner: Run or Die and the future film The Legend of Zelda.

Classic Era of Planet of the Apes

Although the classic era of the franchise ended in 1973, it brings a very interesting story, showing the civilization of monkeys already in a very advanced state. With humans in an almost primitive state, the plot revolves around apes, involving elements such as time travel and social criticism of war and discrimination.

The release order of the films is as follows:

  • Monkey’s Planet
  • Back to the Planet of the Apes
  • Escape from the Planet of the Apes
  • Conquest of the Planet of the Apes
  • Battle for the Planet of the Apes

All films in the franchise are available on Disney+. Planet of the Apes: Reign opens in theaters on May 9th.

May premieres in streaming: Netflix, Max, Prime Video and more
