Neither Barbie nor Oppenheimer: The most profitable film of 2023 exceeded expectations and is now the beginning of a saga – Cinema News

Despite the billion-dollar box office, Barbie was not the most profitable film of 2023.

Although the Barbenheimer phenomenon was the big highlight of 2023 in cinemas, with the film starring Margot Robbie recognized as the highest grossing film of the year, neither of them took the title of most profitable production. In this regard, the winner was Super Mario Bros. – The film.

The animation appeared at the top of the Most Valuable Blockbuster Tournament 2023, a study carried out by the deadline which emerged from the new film distribution model that began during the Covid-19 pandemic. That was when studios began to release their productions at the same time in theaters and on streaming, or with a few months between them – a model that remains today and has proven profitable.

While productions from Marvel, DC and Disney didn’t do as well as expected last year, the top spots on the podium went to the highest-grossing films we already knew, but in a different order. In other words, although Barbie closed 2023 as the highest-grossing film of the year, with more than 1.4 billion dollars raised, it was not considered the most profitable.

As far as revenues are concerned, the deadline considered both the results of films in cinemas and revenues from streaming and television channels, as well as sales of Blu-ray, DVD and other media. Regarding expenses, the site considered production costs, advertising, residual income and other distribution costs, as well as other interest costs and general expenses.

Thus, with total expenses of 400 million dollars and total revenues of 959 million, the result is a net profit for Super Mario Bros. – The film is worth 559 million dollars.

The film, which shouldn’t take long to get a sequel, is ahead of Barbie and its total profit of 421 million, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and its 328 million, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mayhem, which surprised at the box office last year and which is in fourth place in the ranking with a total profit of 204.5 million dollars, ahead of Oppenheimer, winner of the Oscar, with his 202 million.
