Charlie Benante tells how he became Anthrax’s main songwriter

American musician Charlie Benante is one of the most respected drummers in the history of Metal and has been behind the sticks of Anthrax for over 40 years. In addition to providing his hand on songs such as “Madhouse”, “AIR”, “Indians”, “Caught In a Mosh” and “Only”, Benante is the main composer of the quintet founded by guitarist Scott Ian.

In May 2021, during his appearance on the Drum for the Song podcast, Benante explained how and for what reasons he became Anthrax’s main composer. And the answer is quite simple, as can be seen in the transcript published on the Loudwire website.

“I couldn’t convey what I was hearing in my head through the drums to someone else. So I had to learn to play another instrument, which ended up being the guitar, because it was very natural to me; it was easy.

That’s how I did it – I would put tons of riffs on cassette tapes… listen to them, compile them, and create a song from those riffs, and then take it to the band. And that’s how it happened”, declared the talented drummer, who will play with Anthrax at Summer Breeze Brasil.
