More than 10 million Brazilians have already sent their Income Tax Declarations for the base year 2023. Despite the impressive number, less than 25% of taxpayers who need to make the declaration have submitted the document since the deadline given by the Federal Revenue Service was started. Declarants have until May 31st to send the declaration without paying a fine.

Among Brazilians who have already made the declaration, 43.1% used the pre-filling tool and 57.6% chose to send the simplified document. Furthermore, according to data from the Federal Revenue Service, 39.7% of submissions were made by women and the average age of declarants, to date, is 45 years old.

Who needs to declare Income Tax?

Citizens who have received, throughout the year, taxable income above the limit stipulated by the Federal Revenue must declare Income Tax.

  • Received taxable income of at least R$30,639.90.
  • Received non-taxable income or income taxed exclusively at source above R$ 200 thousand;
  • Obtained annual gross revenue from rural activities above R$153,199.50;
  • Had possession or ownership, until December 31, 2023, of assets or rights above R$800 thousand;
  • Carried out operations on the stock exchange or similar;
  • Obtained capital gain on the sale of assets or rights;
  • Opted for tax exemption on capital gains on the sale of residential properties, followed by the acquisition of another, within 180 days;
  • He became resident in Brazil in 2023, and was in this condition on December 31, 2023

I am entitled to a refund, when will I receive it?

According to the calendar published by the Ministry of Finance, refunds will be distributed from May 31st and will last until May 30th. Payments will take place in five batches that will prioritize the elderly, disabled, people with serious illnesses, teachers and taxpayers who opted for a pre-filled declaration or refund via PIX.
