SC artist creates doll inspired by Madonna’s iconic look

A plastic artist from Criciúma, in the south of Santa Catarina, transformed a traditional Barbie into a doll inspired by Madonna 30 years ago. Also a stylist, Vanio Tomé says that customization included hair waving, makeup and a reinterpretation of the iconic cone bra used by the diva on tour Blonde Ambition (see production above).

“This look really made a statement. It was made by a wonderful stylist, and I have a degree in fashion. At the time, this outfit made a statement. It was something unusual, the concept”, he comments.

Perhaps the most famous costume of Madonna’s career, the corset with cone-shaped bra was designed by French designer Jean Paul Gautltier.

The work is meticulous and all done by Tomé. The original doll’s makeup was removed with acetone to make way for the new painting, with a mole above the red lips and slightly separated teeth. The hair, previously straight, became wavy after spending two days curled with paper towel and spray.

“When I was a child, I saw that my mother and my aunts did this to curl their hair. It used to be toilet paper. They would wrap it in their hair to make their hair wavy, with curls. And I brought this technique to doll hair and it worked”, he comments.

The finishing of smaller fabrics, which are quite delicate, is done with a candle to seal them. This prevents the material from fraying.

“The clothes were all made by me. When I see a reference, I always try to look for the fabric that gives that feel. [da roupa original]”, he comments.

The production, according to the artist, took three “non-stop” days to complete. The work is intense, and Tomé admits that he himself is surprised by the resulteven after 14 years of customizing dolls.

“It’s beautiful, beautiful. Sometimes I surprise myself. I don’t know if it’s because I love art. It impresses me, because it looks very, very similar. Especially these miniatures, even the little bow there, the finishing, the stitching , I’m very perfectionist”, he says.

Vanio was also successful on social media with Barbies imitating artists such as Anitta, Jojo Todynho, Alcione, Bruna Marquezine, Beyonce, Rihanna and Lady Gaga. The list of dolls is long. Today, more than 40 thousand followers follow him on the web.
