One of the best shows that Porto Alegre has received in recent years took place on April 25, 2024, at Pepsi On Stage, located in the north of the city. Bruce Dickinson brought “The Mandrake Project Tour” to Brazil and gave an impeccable performance with new and classic songs from his entire career. This was the singer’s fifth visit to the capital of Rio Grande do Sul, three of which were with Iron Maiden in 1992, 2008 and 2019 and with the presentation of a tribute to Deep Purple in 2023, coincidentally, also on April 25th.

Known worldwide for being the voice of Iron Maiden, Bruce has a wonderful solo career, with seven albums recorded. The first of them “Tattooed Millionaire”, released in 1990, and the last “The Mandrake Project”, which appeared to the world in March this year. The last times the Englishman performed his own tours were in 1999, on the tour for the album “The Chemical Wedding”, which visited several cities in Brazil, and, in 2002, with some shows at European festivals. On the current tour, he is joined by Philip Näslund (guitar), Chris Declercq (guitar), Tanya O’Callaghan (bass), Giuseppe “Maestro Mistheria” Iampieri (keyboards) and Dave Moreno (drums). After the intro “Toltec 7 Arrival”, Bruce and his band entered the stage with “Accident of Birth” and the public’s calling card was presented with practically everyone singing the chorus of the song, which was no different in the following: ” Abduction” (performed live for the first time just this year, present on the album “Tyranny of Souls”, from 2005) and “Starchildren” (present for the second time in the current repertoire, which has not happened since 1997).

After shouts of “Bruce, Bruce, Bruce” coming from the audience, it was time to perform “Afterglow of Ragnarok”, a song from the latest album and also released as a single at the end of 2023. In “Chemical Wedding”, the track went down , such was the public’s excitement, with loud screams and singing in the chorus. A little pause for Bruce to breathe, say good night to Porto Alegre and say: “We will play a lot of songs today. You may know the set-list from yesterday and previous nights, but today will be different.” Following the newcomer “Many Doors to Hell”, it was the turn of one that was not present on previous nights, one of the ballads from “The Chemical Wedding” (1998), “Jerusalem”. In “Resurrection Men”, highlights include the bass solo by the talented and experienced Tanya and the presence of Bruce on percussion alongside the drums of the tireless and technical Dave.

On the Pepsi On Stage premium track there is an open space, with a gigantic door, which Bruce seemed to feel uncomfortable with, as he asked for the “damn” door to be closed and only started “Rain on the Graves” when it was completely closed. closed. As Näslund’s guitar was positioned once again on stage, Bruce said: “We always play this here in Brazil”, referring to “Tears of the Dragon”, the last track from “Balls to Picasso” and also released as a single, in 1994, it was presented in a brilliant and sentimental way. “Darkside of Aquarius” was the last one before the encore, which started with the melodic and emotional ballad “Navigate the Seas of the Sun” and, also, “Book of Thel” and “The Tower”, which also became a classic of Bruce over the years.

It was a historic night, one to remember forever. For longtime fans it was a wait of more than 20 years and something unimaginable for younger fans. The concert hall was not completely full, but those present sang non-stop during the two-hour show. Bruce’s band, extremely qualified and charismatic, showed an incredible harmony between the Swedish Näslund and the Swiss Declercq on guitars and an extraordinary joy from the Italian Maestro Mistheria who, at several moments, walked around the stage with his keytar. Bruce was energetic, communicative and sang magnificently from start to finish, without leaving anything to be desired at any point, even at 66 years of age. For fans of Bruce Dickinson and Iron Maiden, the wait for a new meeting will be brief, because the “Future Past World Tour” will pass through Brazil in December this year.
