Madonna, 65, is known worldwide not only for her excellent work as a singer, dancer, composer, producer, businesswoman, actress and writer, but also for her social actions.

The Queen of Pop, immortalized by great hits, such as Like a Prayer, Material Girl It is Like a Virginhis name was on the rise in Brazil, thanks to his historic and free performance on Copacabana Beach, Rio de Janeiro, and supposed million-dollar donation to Rio Grande do Sul, which is fighting storms and floods.

Ray of Light Foundation, founded in 1998

The Raio de Luz Foundation, translated into Portuguese, was founded by Madonna in 1998. A non-profit charitable organization, which “supports organizations around the world that work to promote peace, equal rights and education for all. ” The foundation’s work focuses on the arts, economic empowerment, education, emergency response and equal rights.

In 2013, the Queen of Pop sold the painting Three women at the table rougeby Fernand Leger, for US$7 million, the current equivalent of R$35 million, to benefit the foundation, specifically in supporting the education of girls in Afghanistan, Pakistan and other countries.

Raising Malawi, founded in 2006

Founded in 2006 by Madonna, Raising Malawi “is dedicated to meeting the most critical needs of vulnerable children.”

In 2017, the project built the first and only pediatric surgery and intensive care hospital in the country, the Mercy James Centerwhich bears the same name as one of the Queen of Pop’s daughters. The free public facility offers care for babies and children, and has three operating rooms, the only pediatric ICU in the country and an infirmary with 50 beds.

Raising Malawi also partners with Jacaranda School for Orphans and Home of Hope Children’s Home, organizations that provide essential community and residential care to more than 1,000 orphans. Madonna’s project “funded the launch of a world-class music and arts program, built the school’s first formal dance studio and supports ongoing programs to help the school’s talented students unlock their creative potential.”

After the release of his documentary in 2008, I Am Because We AreMadonna also launched a scholarship and psychosocial support program to train children portrayed in the film.

Fundraising for AIDS-related causes

On several occasions, the artist raised money for the amfAR, one of the world’s leading nonprofit organizations dedicated to AIDS research. In 1987, she raised US$400,000, converted into the current R$2 million, with a show at Madison Square Gardenin New York, on his first tour.

In 1992, she exposed her breasts in a charity fashion show. Jean-Paul Gaultier in Los Angeles, California, raising even more money. The year was 2008 and she auctioned a private show for US$560,000, the equivalent of R$2.8 million, also aimed at the amfAR group. These were just some of the fundraising events organized or with the singer’s participation, focused on the theme.

Donations as responses to disasters

In 2001, the singer announced that she would donate part of the box office proceeds from her shows to a fund for the victims of the attacks on the World Trade Center. She also made donations in 2009, US$ 500 thousand, R$ 2.5 million, to the victims of the earthquake in Pacentro, Italy, and US$ 250 thousand, converted into R$ 1.2 million, after the earthquake in Haiti, in 2010.

More recently, in 2020, Madonna donated R$1 million to the campaign that accelerated research into a vaccine against the coronavirus. During this same time, she also helped donate more than 100,000 surgical masks to prisons.

In addition to all these social actions mentioned in this text, the Queen of Pop actively participated in other concerts and charity events, even donating personal items to raise funds for social causes.
