David Ellefson’s opinion on “Peace Sells”, Megadeth’s classic

-

American bassist David Ellefson is known worldwide for his two stints with Megadeth. Ellefson was part of the band led by guitarist/vocalist Dave Mustaine for around 30 years (1983-2002 and 2010-2021) and recorded great classics, such as “Holy Wars…The Punishment Due”, “Tornado Of Souls”, “In My Darkest Hour” and “Peace Sells”.

The last song mentioned in the previous paragraph is one of Megadeth’s biggest hits and has an iconic introduction played on bass. Without a shadow of a doubt, the intro to “Peace Sells” is the trademark of David Ellefson, bassist who was Dave Mustaine’s faithful squire for decades (a mission that only he was able to accomplish). Interestingly, the intro was created by Mustaine, according to the bassist himself.

In December 2015, during an interview with the Songfacts website, Ellefson spoke about “Peace Sells” and its unforgettable introduction.

“Without a doubt, it is one of the [linhas de baixo] most recognized. That’s right. The reason the song stands out is the melody, for sure. But also, by tone, by sound. For example, when you hear Hendrix play, not only him, but the sound they captured from him at that time is part of the character. When you hear a Sabbath song, you instantly know it’s Sabbath because you’re so familiar with the recording. And I think ‘Peace Sells’ is that.

It’s the bass line, but also, our ear is trained now to hear that recording that we captured in 1986 when we recorded it. I think this actually refers to the fact that this line has been used on MTV all these years [como parte do tema do programa MTV News]. It was something that almost subliminally entered everyone’s home for 10 years, and it’s incredible the effect it has on people,” Ellefson said.

“Plus, it’s a really cool song. And it has a really complicated bass line. When people tell me they just learned how to play bass and this is the first line they’re trying to learn, I say, ‘Maybe you want to learn something a little easier’. This is a very complicated song to play”, concluded the bassist, who is currently part of the band Dieth.

“Peace Sells” is the third track from “Peace Sells…But Who’s Buying?”, Megadeth’s second studio album, released in September 1986. The song was played in more than 1800 Megadeth shows and is at the top of the charts. songs that were most performed in the group’s shows.
