Rappers Drake and Kendrick Lamar have been at constant odds over the past few days. But to understand everything you have to go back to 2013.

Summary:

  • Drake and Kendrick Lamar returned to exchange accusations;
  • The conflict began in 2013;
  • The accusations speak of sexual abuse and domestic violence.

They are two of the most important musicians today, who despite being within the same genre, have completely different styles. But it is not the talent that is at stake but rather the conflict that both have, which has become even more intense in recent days. On April 19th, with the release of “Push-ups”, Drake opened up on hostilities that are still felt today.

After that Kendrick Lamar responded with “euphoria”, “Meet the Grahams” and “Not Like Us”, while Drake responded again with “Family Matters”. Within the songs, to frame the recent story, Kendrick Lamar accuses Drake of having a secret child and having sexual relations with minors. The last song from this conflict was released last weekend but the conflict promises not to stop and has been going on since 2013.

It all started with “Control”, 11 years ago. The first sign of conflict appeared around 2013, when Kendrick Lamar appeared on “Control”, by Big Sean. The American rapper caught the attention of Drake and several other rappers in the song, but Drake decided to ignore it, saying in several interviews that at the time I wouldn’t take the bait, this is because at the time he was in active conflict with Meek Mill and later with Pusha-T. This last rapper performed last year at Primavera Sound Porto and was the one who revealed the existence of Drake’s secret son in the song “The Story of Adidon”.

Drake reignited conflict with Kendrick Lamar late last year with the album “For All The Dogs”, with one song in particular, “First Person Shooter”. In response, Kendrick Lamar released “Like That”, featuring Metro Boomin and Future, and responds with this particular verse – ‘Fore all your dogs gettin’ buried/ That’s a K with all these nines, he gon’ see Pet Sematary.”

After this song J. Cole tried to enter the conflict, with the song “7 minute Drill”. But he left as quickly as he entered and the conflict centered solely between Drake and Kendrick Lamar.

The recent conflict began on April 19th with Drake’s “Push-ups.” In the song, the Canadian rapper makes fun of Kendrick Lamar for being a short man and for making several collaborations in pop music – “Maroon 5 need a verse, you better make it witty/ Then we need a verse for the Swifties”. Kendrick Lamar responded on April 30th with “euphoria” and the conflict between the two quickly escalated. Starting with the title, the song has the same name as the HBO Max series, on which Drake is an executive producer.

The American rapper sees himself as Drake’s biggest hater – “I hate the way that you walk, the way that you talk/ I hate the way that you dress/ I hate the way that you sneak dissing/ If I flight it’s gonna be direct/ We hate the b-tches you f–ck because they confuse themselves with real women”. The same week he released a song via Instagram Reels, titled “6:16 in LA”.

The title has multiple layers – Father’s Day this year in Canada, OJ Simpson trial and Tupac’s birth date. But the strongest is the biblical reference – Corinthians 6:16, which can be read as a criticism of Drake’s alleged taste in the female sex: “Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, ‘The two will become one flesh.’”

What comes next?

Drake responds with “Family Matters”, in which he questions whether Kendrick Lamar is the real father of his daughter with Whitney Alford, in the same way that he accuses him of being unfaithful and abusive within the relationship. On the same day as the release of this hour-long song, Kendrick Lamar responds with “Meet The Grahams”, probably the most “aggressive” song of all, from accusing him of having had plastic surgery on his buttocks to comparison with Harvey Weistein. Still without a response, Kendrick Lamar released “Not Like Us”, which features Drake’s mansion as the cover. Here the American rapper accuses Drake of being a sexual predator.

Drake’s response only appeared last Sunday night, via a https://twitter.com/Drake/status/1787294993079750767 on the social network X, titled “The Heart Part 6”. In his response, Drake denies any accusation from Kendrick Lamar and claims that he purposely gave false information to the American rapper to see if he was deceiving him.

The controversy between Drake and Kendrick Lamar seems to have no end in sight, as the two continue to exchange insults with increasingly serious allegations made against each other.
