It was when he was just 15 years old that the K-pop star Hyuna began to face eating problems due to aesthetic pressure. At the time, the singer had just debuted on the music scene and was trying to manage a restrictive diet to maintain her 40 kg weight: she only ate one piece of sushi throughout the day. Today, at 31 years old, the artist says that the practice caused her to have serious nerve damage.
During the talk show Season B, Hyuna gave her account of the consequences of aesthetic pressure in her life. The South Korean superstar said she survived by eating very little for years in an attempt to lose weight.
“At that time, I survived on a single piece of kimbap [sushi coreano] while carrying out all scheduled activities. And it destroyed me. At 26, I wasn’t very healthy,” revealed the star, who followed the restrictive diet for almost 10 years.
Because of this, Hyuna lives with a serious consequence: peripheral neuropathy. According to Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein, the condition occurs when there is damage to the nerves that leave the spinal cord and go to the limbs. Because of this, the nerves do not transmit information correctly.
“They are the ones who control the sensations of pain, cold and heat and also muscle movements, which are impaired”, explains the Hospital note.
The K-pop star says he discovered the sequel after feeling ill. “Whenever my weight dropped too much, it would trigger this. I would faint after surviving on just one piece of kimbap. I fainted 12 times in one month,” she reported.
One of these intense episodes of fainting occurred during the recording of the video for his album I’m Not Coolreleased in 2020.
