Elton John, a young pianist at the time, and lyricist Bernie Taupin, met in 1967 and forged a partnership that has continued for more than 50 years. Their process is simple: Bernie writes the lyrics and sends them to Elton John, who starts working on them on the piano.
“I’ve been writing songs with Bernie for 56 years, and we never imagined this would happen to us. It’s an incredible honor for two British guys to be recognized in this way. I’m so honored,” said Elton John.
“To be in a house with the greatest American composers, to be in the same place is humbling, and I am very happy to accept this honor,” added Bernie.
