The heavy rainfall that took place this morning in the Porto region caused several floods.

According to Jornal de Notícias, a flood at S. Bento Station, in Porto, interrupted the circulation of the metro between Trindade and Jardim do Morro stations, in Gaia.

The information is confirmed on the company’s website, where it reads that the Yellow line (D) is “discontinued between the Trindade and Jardim do Morro stations, due to the flooding of the S. Bento Station (normal operation between Hospital S. João and Trindade and between Jardim do Morro and Santo Ovídio).

According to the metro “there is no forecast, at the moment, for the reopening time”.

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) warned this Friday of the passage of frontal systems through mainland Portugal this weekend.

“After a few days without precipitation, the passage of frontal systems across the continent over the weekend (January 7th and 8th) will give rise to the occurrence of heavy and persistent precipitation on the coast north of Cabo Mondego, especially in the Minho region. ”, adds the IPMA, in a statement.

According to the IPMA, heavy rain will occur between dawn and early afternoon on Saturday and between dawn and afternoon on Sunday, “accumulated values may vary between 100 and 180 mm [milímetros] in mountainous regions and between 80 and 100 mm in non-mountainous regions”.

The IPMA had already placed the districts of Porto, Viana do Castelo, Aveiro and Braga under orange warning on Saturday, due to the forecast of periods of sometimes heavy rain.

The warning in the four districts will be in effect between 03:00 and 12:00 on Saturday, then changing to a yellow warning until 18:00 on Sunday.

There will also be strong maritime agitation on the west coast from Saturday and throughout the day on Sunday, with waves of five to six meters of significant height north of Cabo da Roca and four to five meters south of the same location.

The IPMA also issued an orange warning for the districts of Porto, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Aveiro, Coimbra and Braga due to maritime unrest.
