Roads cut, streets flooded and the São Bento Metro station closed after heavy rain. Porto, Viana do Castelo, Aveiro and Braga are under yellow warning due to heavy precipitation

The districts of Porto, Viana do Castelo, Aveiro and Braga left the orange warning at 12:00 o’clock due to the forecast of periods of sometimes heavy rain, changing to a yellow warning until 18:00 on Sunday, according to information available on Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) website.

In the Porto district, where the orange warning for precipitation was in effect from 6:00 am to 12:00 pm, there were records of floods and flooded streets, as happened in Vila Nova de Gaia, where several cars ended up trapped by the waters.

“The car stopped me there and stopped working. I had to get out of the car through the window, me and my dogs”, says Isabel who got the car stuck in the water at a roundabout in Canidelo, Vila Nova de Gaia, after a heavy rain.

There are also reports of flooded garages in Vila Nova de Gaia after the heavy rain at the end of the morning.

Also in the center of Porto, the São Bento Metro Station is closed because it was affected by the flood that was felt on Rua das Flores, which is cut off in the first block, as CNN Portugal found on the spot. The Municipal Police also cut Rua Mouzinho da Silveira.

According to the information available on the Metro do Porto website, circulation on the Yellow Line is interrupted between Trindade and Jardim do Morro stations, due to the flooding of S. Bento Station, with no timetable for reopening.

Despite having passed the yellow warning for precipitation, on Sunday Braga, Porto and Viana do Castelo are again under orange warning between 6:00 and 12:00 due to heavy precipitation.

Waves up to 11 meters

This Sunday, Porto, Viana do Castelo, Aveiro and Braga will also be under orange warning due to maritime agitation. In addition to these, Coimbra, Leiria and Lisbon are joined, where “northwest waves of 5 to 6 meters are also expected, reaching a maximum height of up to 11 meters”. The orange warning will be in effect from 3:00 am to 9:00 pm on Sunday, after which it will change to yellow.

There will also be strong maritime agitation on the west coast from Saturday and throughout the day on Sunday, with waves of five to six meters of significant height north of Cabo da Roca and four to five meters south of the same location.

The districts of Faro, Setúbal and Beja are also under yellow warning due to maritime agitation, with northwest waves of 4 to 5 meters expected between 06:00 on Sunday and 00:00 on Monday.

The districts of Bragança, Guarda, Vila Real will also have a yellow warning, but due to the forecast of persistent fog, which will be freezing in some places, until 21:00 today.

The orange warning indicates a moderate to high risk meteorological situation and the yellow warning is issued by the IPMA whenever there is a risk situation for certain activities dependent on the meteorological situation.
