The sentence for Rui Viana, son of Rui Óscar, can range from life imprisonment to death by firing squad.

Rui Viana, one of the two Portuguese arrested for drug trafficking in Indonesia, is the son of former player Rui Óscar, who among others represented FC Porto, Marítimo and Boavista. The young man who put an end to his football career last summer, aged just 20, “is facing a sentence that could be life imprisonment or death by firing squad”.

To what the CM has learned, the young man’s mother is on her way to Indonesia to be with her son.

Rui was reportedly detained last week, when he traveled by plane from Lisbon to Jakarta, upon arrival. Higino Teles, president of Câmara de Lobos, one of the clubs that the young man represented, has already asked the Portuguese State for help with the main objective of obtaining a “request for clemency”.

The two detainees are between 20 and 30 years old and are university students. On Thursday, they received a consular prison visit from the Portuguese Embassy in Jakarta. The embassy remains in contact with the Indonesian authorities.
