Right-wingers against Marcelo’s colonial reparations, exchange attacks and agree to celebrations on the 25th of November

-

In the solemn celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April, for the first time with 50 deputies from the radical right sitting on the benches – an irony highlighted by André Ventura -, the four parties of that “hemisphere” gave speeches with crossed attacks, praising the 25th of November and criticism from the left, but above all with an unusual target: three of the interventions pointed bayonets at the President of the Republic, also a right-winger, for suggesting reparations to countries colonized by Portugal on the eve of the celebrations.. They varied in tone and intensity, but Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was accused of treason by Chega and censured by Initiative Liberal and CDS. He was only spared by the PSD.

The parliamentary leader of the CDS, Paulo Núncio, opened hostilities, followed by the leader of the Liberal Initiative, Rui Rocha, but the most aggressive was André Ventura. The leader of Chega began by saying that he withdrew his written intervention after hearing the President of the Republic suggest the need to pay compensation to colonized countries, at a dinner with foreign correspondents in Portugal. “I’m very sorry”, said the head of the radical right in Parliament, to launch one of the worst accusations that can be made against a Head of State: that of treason.
