O Pope Francis arrived this Sunday in Venice, in northern Italy, for his first trip of the year. The visit comes after a series of health problems forced the holy pontiff to cancel his schedule over the last few months.
This is also the 87-year-old Pope’s first visit to the city since he was elected in 2013, and the first time that a pontiff has been to the Venice Biennale. The first visit was to a women’s prison on the Venetian island of Giudecca, where the Vatican created its art exhibition pavilion this year.
The exhibition space, in which the inmates have collaborated, is titled ‘With their eyes’ and, through works by artists such as Maurizio Cattelan, Claure Fontaine or Bintou Dembélé, reflects on the pain and stigma of these women inside and outside from prison.
Pope Francis today considered it “fundamental” that the prison system offers prisoners “spaces for growth”, during his visit to inmates at the Venice women’s prison.

It should be noted that this is the Pope’s first trip since a brief visit to France, in September last year. In December, he was supposed to participate in a conference on climate change in the United Arab Emirates, but canceled due to flu, recalls the Reuters news agency. In March, he canceled his presence in the Via Crucis procession “to preserve his health”.
Over the next three months, he will make new trips within Italy: Verona, Trieste and Bari. Then follows the longest foreign trip of his papacy, heading to Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Timor-Leste and Singapore, between September 2nd and 13th.
