“It would be positive if the Government negotiated its proposal and even agreed to increase the value of the tax reduction a little, in favor of approval”.

The OECD revealed that Portugal is the eighth country in the group with the highest taxes for a single person without children and the sixth for a couple with two children. These are both positions above the OECD average, and which reflect the tax burden currently applied in Portugal.

In the case of single workers, Marques Mendes recalls that ahead of Portugal are “only richer countries, such as Belgium, Germany or Austria”, while the situation is “even worse” in the case of couples, in which the tax burden is “well above the OECD average”.

For this reason, and once again, the “SIC” commentator comments on the IRS topic.

“These data now released by the OECD prove the correctness of the Government’s proposal to make a new reduction in the IRS. Let us now hope that the Assembly of the Republic makes the correct decision and does not make a good solution unfeasible.”

Luís Marques Mendes points out that the Government “presents a proposal to lower the IRS in the amount of 350 million euros. As there is no majority in Parliament, it would be positive for the Government to negotiate its proposal and even accept to increase the value of the tax reduction a little, in favor of approval”, especially now that the case is being discussed in the specialty, without running the risk of the proposal being rejected by the opposition.

“In turn, it would be positive if opposition parties did not make unaffordable financial demands. Increasing, for example, the Government’s proposal from 350 to 500 million may still be tolerable. Increasing it to double or more, as some propose, could seriously compromise public finances. It takes balance, dialogue and common sense”, said the former PSD president.
