Urbanization project for Quinta dos Ingleses
The only green space next to the sea on the Cascais Line could soon disappear. The Cascais City Council has already authorized the construction of a mega-project in Quinta dos Ingleses, which could replace what many experts already consider to be the lungs of Carcavelos.
The community, worried, promises not to give up and will take precautionary measures to try to stop the work. “There are 52 hectares of forest with incalculable environmental value that will disappear. The Cascais City Council does not listen to anyone and is agreeing to an authentic environmental crime, an ecocide”, says Pedro Jordão, vice-president of the environmental association SOS Quinta dos Ingleses.
The municipality defends itself by claiming the complexity of the process, which has been going on for decades. Carlos Carreiras, president of the municipality, talks about the risk of having to pay millionaire compensation of around 264.31 million euros (plus interest) and also the danger of initial construction rights being licensed, much higher than the current ones and without any environmental concerns.
In addition to the environmental consequences, there is also the harsh reality of 50 people who survive crammed into trailers and tents just a few meters from the beach and who have to leave the space by May 31st. To see this Tuesday on CM Investigation.
