A Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) issued, late Friday night, a statement in which it did not hold back on criticism of Dani Alves and Robinho, players who were sentenced to prison terms for crimes of a sexual nature.
For the organization, this conclusion puts “an end to one of the most harmful chapters in Brazilian football”: “The two cases, which involve players who were stars of the Brazilian football team, one of the greatest cultural icons in our country, cannot end with the conviction of the two culprits”.
“It is essential that the courageous attitude of the victims inspires more and more women not to remain silent in the face of barbarities of this order. More than that: in an environment where machismo prevails, we, men, need to be on the front line to combat not just sexual violence, but all types of violence”, it can be read.
“The yellow shirt that Brazilian athletes wear on the field is more than just a uniform. Just as football is more than just a sport for Brazil. It is up to those who wear it to defend the feelings and values of an entire country represented there It is shameful that an athlete feels comfortable committing this type of perversity, believing that what he achieved through sport will somehow shield him from any punishment”, he continues.
“The CBF has ostensibly acted to combat violence that took place in the sporting environment without being addressed with due firmness. The fight against racism, homophobia and violence motivated by fan fights crosses the entity’s agenda of priorities in a transversal way, in all its areas of activity”, he adds, listing the initiatives he has already promoted.
